The Liberty Coaster Company started building wooden toy wagons in Chicago in 1917. In 1930, the company was renamed Radio Steel & Manufacturing; produced the world's first steel wagon and named the brilliant red color creation "Radio Flyer". Radio Flyer was coined from the relative recent inventions of the radio and flight.

Throughout the second half of the 20th century and into the 21st, the Radio Flyer has become synonymous with a little red wagon pulled and/or pushed by kids around the world. The coined terms is also associated with a wide range of children's toy vehicles, including fire engines, bicycles and tricycles, spaceships and racers.
